MOTION:

I move that the City create the Lisa Letney Award, to honor those who volunteer to serve Salem’s unsheltered and others at risk of becoming unsheltered.

DISCUSSION:

Salem just lost a tremendous advocate for the homeless, Lisa Letney. Lisa worked tirelessly to feed the unsheltered and more. Her compassion and selflessness are an inspiration to all those who serve people in need. To honor her legacy, and to shine a light on the work of other volunteers who serve the unsheltered in years to come, I would like us to create a volunteer award specific to serving the homeless in Lisa’s honor. Lisa’s family supports the creation of this award.

Every year, hundreds of Salem residents find ways to serve our unsheltered, such as working in soup kitchens, organizing clothing drives, volunteering at a warming center, and much more. This award would not only honor Lisa’s legacy to our community, but would also recognize the work of other volunteers who serve the unsheltered.
