MOTION:
I move that City Council adopt the recommendations of the Salem Human Rights Commission contained in(Attachment 1) and direct staff to bring back to City Council recommendations for amendments to SRC chapter 97 - Human Rights - to include “housing status” as a protected class, and revise references to gender identity and sexual orientation in SRC 97.085.
DISCUSSION:
On December 8, 2021, the Salem Human Rights Commission adopted the recommendation of its Equity Lens Chapter 97 Workgroup sub-committee (Attachment 1). It recommends that City Council consider amendments to SRC chapter 97 - Human Rights - to:
1. Explore the adoption of “housing status” as a protected class under the chapter, and
2. Review SRC 97.085 to potentially remove usage of gendered language to be more inclusive.
See the full Commission recommendation for more detail (Attachment 1).
