MOTION:

I move that City staff prepare a report comparing City Council member compensation in Oregon cities comparable to Salem and if information is easily available, such as through the League of Oregon Cities, that all Oregon cities be included in the report.

DISCUSSION:

Over the past eight years, citizens have asked about Council member compensation and it has been a topic of conversation at neighborhood meetings.  Compensation varies among cities and can include salary, meeting stipend, and mileage and other reimbursements.  Given that Salem does not offer any sort of compensation, the information would provide a helpful comparison.  This information could be considered by a citizen task force, could be used to identify specific areas for councilor compensation (such as mileage reimbursement), or Council could decide not to take any action.  The report would be a starting place for discussion and consideration.
