SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND:

 

This information report contains the 2017 Annual Report from the Salem Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. The report highlights accomplishments during 2017 and sets goals for 2018.  

 

 

FACTS AND FINDINGS:

 

The Salem Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was first established in June 1952 and has been an active advisory board to Salem City Council for the past 66 years. 

 

Salem Revised Code (SRC) Chapter 13 governs the Salem Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and lists its functions as: 

 

                     Recommend and advise the Council, Planning Commission, and other bodies, groups, or officials on all matters referred to it. 

 

                     To act in the role of community catalyst in the formation and achievement of a comprehensive community-wide parks and recreation system and program to serve the horticultural, environmental, historical, cultural, and leisure needs of all city residents.

 

                     To make and issue reports to Council on studies, research, examination, and other activities as may be required by the Council.

                     Those duties as set forth under SRC Chapter 86, Trees on City Owned Property.

 

The Salem Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meets on the second Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. in a Public Works conference room. Board meetings are open to the public.

 

The Annual Report documents the past year’s accomplishments related to parks and recreation, such as: parks planning, park land acquisitions, park improvements, recreational programs, and grant programs. The Annual Report also sets goals for the next year.
