SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND:
Authorized in 2013 by the Salem City Council, the Mayor’s International Council works to raise awareness of the international qualities of Salem. The purpose of the Council is to recognize, celebrate and promote the diverse and international culture of the city of Salem. The Council highlights positive contributions in the area of cultural and international relations in Salem.
The Council:
a. Recognizes residents and organizations that make the city of Salem a member of the global community.
b. Promotes cultural awareness and understanding for the enrichment of the community.
c. Indirectly assists in attracting international businesses that value an intercultural community.
d. Acknowledges and appreciates the value of diversity.
FACTS AND FINDINGS:
The Mayor’s International Council created a report to identify the cultural communities represented in Salem. The report provides information about the number and types of cultural organizations and the number of nationalities represented in Salem.
