SUMMARY:

Following passage of a bond measure by the voters of Salem to pay for seismic and building improvements to the Salem Public Library, the City of Salem is partnering with Howard S. Wright Construction and Hacker Architects, experts in library design, on the Salem Public Library renovation. This design-build team is uniquely positioned to address the unknowns of this sizeable renovation project. The challenge is to finish the project within budget in a busy and expensive construction market, finding a structural seismic retrofit solution that doesn't adversely impact the Library space.

FACTS AND FINDINGS:

Given the nature and breadth of this project, Mayor Bennett has appointed a Council Subcommittee to act as a conduit for information sharing between project officials and the elected body. Councilors Lewis and Hoy have agreed to serve on this subcommittee. Library Advisory Board member, Lois Stark, has also agreed to serve.

BACKGROUND:

In November 2017, Salem voters approved a bond <https://www.cityofsalem.net/Pages/salem-public-library-bond-information.aspx> that pays for earthquake safety and building systems improvements to the Salem Public Library <https://www.cityofsalem.net/library> to make it safer in an earthquake, improve accessibility within and around the exterior of the building, and make other critical improvements including replacement of Library shelving. These changes will ensure the Library will continue to be a resource for the Salem community for decades to come. Work is scheduled to begin in early 2020 and estimated to be completed in the summer of 2021.
